The Neill-Wint Center for Neurodiversity will assist students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the transition to college life and help ensure postsecondary success. The program focuses on a collaborative model that promotes the development of self-advocacy and independent living skills to encourage strong academic and social progress. Varying levels of academic, social and residential support will aid students in meeting their personal and professional goals.
Participating students must meet USAO’s general admissions standards and also apply to be part of the center. They must maintain full-time enrollment (12 hours or more) and will be paired with specially-trained faculty advisors as well as social coaches* who are available to help with prioritization, time management and academic monitoring. *A social coach is a current USAO student (Sophomore level or above) who is paired with a Neurodiversity student to be a social guide/peer mentor during their time here at USAO.
The Center for Neurodiversity is named for Phillip Wint and his wife Katie, whose maiden name was Neill. Katie’s initial interest in USAO came from childhood, when her mother attended the Oklahoma College for Women. After many years in Los Angeles, they took early retirement and returned to Katie’s hometown of Chickasha, becoming some of USAO’s and the community’s most ardent supporters. Beyond their involvement with the Center for Neurodiversity, the Wints have established the William Neill, Dollie Fortenberry McDonald, and Wint scholarships at USAO.
Cost of program: $1,000/semester
