USAO’s biology program provides students with a comprehensive curriculum in the study of living organisms that encourages them to develop the keys skills used in scientific research, such as thorough examination, careful experimentation, and critical thought.
Most biologists study the interrelationships between organisms, and, in light of USAO’s interdisciplinary mission, our biology program forms a very natural part of the campus.
Pairing exceptional classroom instruction with numerous opportunities for original research projects, USAO’s biology department prepares students for advanced study in graduate school and for careers in biomedicine, research, allied health, private industry and education.

The coursework combines the bachelor’s degree in biology with the professional education core required in all of our teacher preparation programs.
The teacher certification program provides students with superior instruction in biology theory and practice while also giving them a solid foundation in how to pass on this knowledge in an elementary and secondary school setting.
All requirements for teacher certification programs are subject to change if new requirements are established by the Oklahoma State Board of Education, the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education or the Office of Educational Quality and Accountability (OEQA).
